The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes his living by carrying out murders for top pay. He soon meets his match: a dogged British intelligence officer who tracks him down in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe.
The show shifts the setting to the current era
The “Day of the Jackal” novel is set in 1963 and concerns an assassination attempt on then-French President Charles de Gaulle. Referenced in Graham Norton, Cost: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossoms (2024).
TLDR: Redmayne nailed it
Lynch is miscast, which doesn’t detract from an otherwise spectacular and high quality production, it’s just a high bar that Redmayne has set; a more believable antagonist/antagonist character is needed to challenge the Jackal. Overall, the story is a serviceable adaptation.
The deception barometer is constantly running in the background
The character development works reasonably well, even if some things are simply left open in the main characters’ narratives, but that could be intentional. The locations, varied interactions, and Redmayne’s provision of languages and character changes really add a special layer to the story arc.
If so, Se02 could be quite promising
I’m curious to see how Se01 ends and how the quality is maintained or improved in Se02. Hopefully Lynch takes it easy to be less forced and deliver a more nuanced performance to counter Redmayne.
