They definitely just develop characters and set a unique tone
Spies, London, Keira, Ben, quality cinematography, a wonderful soundtrack – what could go wrong? Plus, I already know it’s my favorite genre and I’ll overlook any flaws that come my way. But when episode 1’s dialogue was slow, some moments lingered too long, and scenes of Quinten-style attempted dialogue left me cold, I tried to console myself.
I was wrong
As the episodes dragged on, I realized this series wasn’t going to work. Not just unrelated, but with few to no characters I actually cared about. I honestly don’t know how the magic happens, but I was deeply drawn to the stories and characters of The Slow Horses, The Americans, Le Bureau, The Diplomat, and even The Old Man, with all their flaws.
I’m so sad for what could have been
Add to that the lack of stakes and the numerous omissions of important details, and the annoying ratio: intrigued becomes too high to be funny. Yes, all the basic elements of espionage are here in Black Doves, but for some reason there was no salt in the recipe and by E03 I was already increasing the playback speed. “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
